This site lies in the eastern part of Central Anatolia, in west Cappadocia, 25 km southeast of Aksaray, in a landscape of "Volcanic Cappadocia" on the banks of the Melendiz River/in the narrow valley along the alluvial flood-plain of the river, in the village of Kızılkaya (redrock). The region, about 1000 m above sea level (the highest oint of the Aşıklı mound stands 1119,45 m), forms part of the Central Anatolian steppe. The region is rich in source of obsidian.
The mound of Aşıklı covers an area of 3,5 - 4 ha and dates between 8500 and 7500 cal. BC (PPNB). |
