Description Til Huzur-Yayvantepe is a small mound located about 3km east of the site of Cayönü, in the northern part of the Ergani Plain (district of Diyarbakir). A short salvage excavation was carried out on the site in August 1991, in collaboration wth the Diyarbakir Museum, under the scientific supervision of Isabella Caneva. The investigations at Til Huzur, together with the surface survey carried out in the region in the previous season, were inteded to complement the research carried out at Cayönü. A few deeper soundings were planned during the surface investigations in particular cases, in order to obtain further information on the cultural sequence of the region beyond the limits of the Cayönü stratigraphy. More substantial field activities in the site, planned for subsequent campaigns, had to be postponed and finally were never carried out. The site is a small mound, about 15m high, with fairly steep slopes. At the time of the excavation, the top of he mound was entirely occupied by a small modern village, which had been renamed Yayvantepe. It is a special case for a number of reasons: first of all, it is similar in size and shape to the multistratified höyük from Chalcolithic to Roman times established in the middle of th plain, despite the fact that it was located at the edge of the alluvial plain, as were all the early prehistoric sites; secondly, the site was in the immediate neighbourhood of Cayönü, and its occupation was tentatively attributed to a time span which comprised the final phases of the Cayönü sequence and the diffusion of the Halaf culture in this region. The investigations at Til Huzur were too soon and too unexpectedly interrupted to allow for conclusive hypotheses regarding the cultural attribution of the deposits and even the sit formation processes.
