Description The borders of the settlement lay inside the Royal Road in the West, outside of the core area there was no substantial expansion; one pottery shard was found close to the Bronze Age Houses, two pottery shards and one axe were found on the Koutoulaki-field in the North; finds from the Neolithic were also made at the border of the tell north-eastern of the Minoan Palace, and occasionally in the North and West of the Minoan Palace. The area probably grew to the size of 4 ha, the population was less than 1 000. The Kephala hill was continually inhabited, but the settlement moved to different spots on the hill over time, so the actual size of the settlement is hard to determine. The hinterland of Knossos had evergreen forests with oaks, bushes and a few conifers. The climate was thermo-mediterranean.
